LLAP

“A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP”

That was supposedly Leonard Nimoy’s last tweet.

I was and still am a fan of the Star Trek universe. I was a rabid fan back in the 70s when I was a ‘tweener. One of my favourite memories, a perfect moment, was watching Star Trek while sitting on the floor in front of our black and white television with my Dad and my Brother. The TV had an old rotary tuner and would slowly go out of tune as the TV warmed up. I seemed to have a magic touch that would bring the picture back into sharp focus. I was quite proud of my magic touch and took my Star Trek TV focus responsibilities seriously.

Later while in High School a new show on TV caught my attention. In Search of… was like an X-files documentary and stared Leonard Nimoy as the narrator. I believe that these two shows along with the original Star Wars were responsible for my tastes in entertainment. Leonard Nimoy was in two of the three.

I will admit that Kirk was always my hero on Star Trek, but his relationship with Spock helped me define how good friends behave towards one another.

In 2013 my wife and I finally got a chance to go to a Star Trek Convention. We were able to see a lot of the old cast members; we met William Shatner and had lunch with Quark. Leonard Nimoy was not there. It was disappointing; I would have liked to have met him. He sounds like an interesting person who accomplished a lot in his life. The more I learn about all the things Leonard Nimoy did with his life the more I respect the man rather than the alien he portrayed on TV.

The legacy of Leonard Nemoy will live on for many, many years. Spock was an iconic character, and the more we learn about Leonard’s life the more he will be admired. I am looking forward to all the attention that the media will be giving to his exploits in remembrance. I just hope they look beyond Spock and expose the really interesting person who played him.
